I try to make it a goal to always have a book on the go. Sometimes it is difficult to keep the momentum of reading it up, especially when life is busy. But if I don’t have a book on the go, I tend to feel unfulfilled. Right now I am reading The City of Falling Angels by John Berendt. Lately I’ve been really into reading non-fiction, and this book definitely falls into that category. It tells the stories of various residents of Venice, Italy whom the author met while living in Venice in the months following a devastating fire that completely destroyed the famed opera house The Fenice.
The author’s goal is simple: to write about actual Venetians, not the tourists who overcrowd and overwhelm the popular city. What emerges is a thoughtful, provocative and extremely well told story of the real Venice.
I would highly recommend it. John Berendt wrote another novel, before this one, called Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. In it he takes the same approach as The City of Falling Angels, except this time it’s an in depth look at the city of Savannah, Georgia. Berendt’s writing is SO captivating, interesting and engrossing that these books will make you want to book a trip to both Savannah and Venice.
They would also make for great summer reading.
